Halloween Candy - Trick or Treating

Halloween Candy

It may surprise you that I, as a holistic nutritionist, am not against the idea of trick or treating for candy.

Let me explain.

I truly believe in balance and the notion of 'once you know the rules and live by them most of the time, it is completely okay to break them here and there'.

What I mean is that if you and your children have a healthy diet and lifestyle most of the time then indulging in candy on Halloween isn't a big deal. Your healthy body will be able to process and deal with the candy in a healthy manner.

BUT if someone does not have a healthy diet and lifestyle and is one that is indulging almost all the time then the extra candy indulgences at Halloween will only throw this person into an even more unbalanced state.

Our health is what we do MOST of the time not what we do here and there on a special occasion.

So now let me re-phrase that first sentence:

I am not against the idea of indulging in Halloween candy if you eat healthy most other times.

It is the job of parents to help their children to eat healthy most of the time and then to monitor what and how much Halloween treats are eaten.

And remember that, aside from Halloween candy and trick or treating, there are many other options.

How about throwing a party at your home where you can have healthier versions of sweet treats?

How about choosing to give out things other than candy? Things like yo-yos, jewelry beads, stickers and toy cars.

With a little creativity you can turn Halloween into something that doesn't have to be all about candy.

I have made a long list of non-candy ideas here for you to check out. Please add any ideas you have in the comments section on that page.

As Halloween approaches, stay balanced, stay healthy and enjoy some extra sweetness!

Recipe of the Month - Homemade Mouthwash

I will soon be adding a page to the website with several different mouthwash/mouth rinse recipes. As a preview, here is one of our favourites;

Before I get to the recipe just a quick note about store bought mouthwashes... Far too many of the mouthwashes on the market are filled with alcohol, color dyes and other health damaging ingredients. When used, these can affect the pH balance of our mouth and saliva which can contribute to problems in the mouth.

For a healthy mouthwash try this simple recipe;

Mix this up in a glass jar and keep near your sink. To use, swish a mouthful around your mouth after brushing.

The baking soda is an asset to the normally alkaline saliva (not adversely affecting the pH balance) and the peppermint essential oil is antimicrobial, antibacterial and very refreshing.

Recommended Movie of the Month - Genetic Roulette

This documentary discusses Genetically Modified (GM) food.

Genetic Roulette

GM food is a big issue in our world right now and one that affects every single one of us.

GM food is food that is modified by scientists at a genetic level. Genes from species that would never come together in Nature are unnaturally combined together in a lab.

The result of this is food that was never intended by Nature being ingested by humans and other animals. Eating this unnatural food causes all sorts of minor to major and chronic health problems. This is very serious.

One of the biggest issues in the US, aside from the mere existence of GM foods, is that companies are not required to label if there are GM ingredients in their products... and nowadays the majority of processed and packaged foods DO contain GM ingredients.

What do we do about this?

How do we avoid GM foods?

Could this be what is making me and/or my children sick?

For some answers and lots of great information about this extremely important topic please watch GENETIC ROULETTE

Become aware!

Grab a copy of this movie and watch it with friends, give it to friends, share about it on Facebook. The more awareness that is raised about this, the sooner we can demand it be stopped!
