The Four Agreements

The Four Agreements

The Four Agreements is a book written by Don Miguel Ruiz. As the title suggests, within this book there are four clearly written agreements.

I read this book more than a decade ago and I immediately found the wisdom within it to be very practical and common sense.

These four agreements are something that I constantly refer to in my life and often share with others.

BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth.

DONT TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you wont be the victim of needless suffering.

DONT MAKE ASSUMPTIONS

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST

Your best is going to change from moment to moment, it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse and regret.

One of the most important aspects of your holistic health is maintaining a good state of mind and having an attitude of gratitude. I truly hope that the above wisdom from Don Miguel Ruiz is something that you can find helpful in your life.

Will you make these agreements with yourself?

Just try it and see what happens.  Print out a copy of the agreements and carry them with you.  Refer to them often so you will have them at the front of your mind.

And then commit to them and see what happens.  For a week, make a commitment to follow the four agreements and just watch what happens in your life.

It may not always be easy and you may stumble here and there - that is completely okay.  It is not about being perfect, it is about striving to do your best (which, beautifully enough, is actually the last agreement).

Be patient and gentle with yourself, you are so worth it!!
